The Honest Answer: It Depends on the Damage
One of the most common questions we hear is "how long will this take?" The honest answer ranges from a few hours to several weeks — and that range exists for good reason. Here's how to estimate your repair timeline based on what happened to your vehicle.
Repair Timelines by Damage Type
Minor Dents and Paintless Dent Repair — Same Day to 1 Business Day
Small door dings and hail damage without paint breakage can often be completed the same day you bring your vehicle in, or within one business day. PDR doesn't require drying time or paint curing, which is the biggest time-saver.
Paint Touch-Ups and Minor Scratches — 1 to 2 Business Days
Surface scratches that need color application and clear coat require time for the paint to flash off and cure before the vehicle can be handled. Factor in a minimum of 24 hours for proper cure, longer if multiple panels are affected.
Single Panel Collision Repair — 3 to 5 Business Days
A single damaged door, fender, or bumper that needs metal work, filler, primer, paint, and clear coat is typically a three to five day job. This gives time for each material stage to properly cure before the next is applied. Rushing paint work leads to failure — peeling, cracking, and color mismatch.
Multi-Panel Collision — 1 to 3 Weeks
When two or more panels are damaged, repair timelines extend significantly. Technicians work through the panels in sequence, and blending paint across adjacent panels for color continuity adds time. Add frame straightening, and you're looking at 2 to 3 weeks minimum.
Major Structural Damage — 3 to 6 Weeks or More
Severe accidents involving frame damage, airbag deployment, or significant mechanical component replacement can stretch into a month or beyond. Frame straightening requires precise measurements and verification against manufacturer specs. Airbag replacement involves sensors, modules, and safety-critical verification steps.
What Can Delay Your Repair?
- Parts availability: OEM parts for some makes (especially foreign and luxury vehicles) can take 1 to 2 weeks to arrive. Supply chain disruptions still affect parts lead times in 2025.
- Insurance supplements: Hidden damage discovered during teardown requires a supplemental estimate approved by your insurer — this can add 2 to 5 business days.
- Shop volume: High-volume shops may schedule your vehicle 1 to 2 weeks out before work even begins.
- Weather: Paint work requires controlled temperature and humidity. Extreme weather can delay paint application.
How to Minimize Your Wait
Get your estimate done before your rental period starts. Order parts before dropping off your vehicle if your shop allows it. Communicate clearly with your insurance adjuster to avoid supplement delays. And choose a shop that's transparent about its schedule — a shop that can't give you a written timeline is one that doesn't control its own workflow.
